Thirty years ago I purchased a 1965 Mustang Fastback
with the intention of rebuilding the engine—
Equipped with 289 4bbl and 4speed, this car seemed
the perfect project for a recent High School graduate.
When selecting this particular car I hesitated initially,
backing out of the purchase because I was very
concerned about the extent of the rust and body damage
the car had. But this Mustang had a few extras (Cragar
S/S mags, an 8-Track and Shelby Valve Covers) that I
really wanted, so after much deliberation, and wishful
thinking, I eventually talked myself into it and bought
the Fastback— $1,100.
In about two weeks the motor was out of the car, torn down and off to the machine shop. While the block was out being bored and the valves ground, the car sat in my parent’s garage. I closely inspected the the body and chassis— not good. This was one of those cars that had been ‘improoved’ with ‘kustom’ components, not to mention the collision damage and rust. “Yes... that’s quite a project you have there”, my father complimented my good judgment as I lay beneath this heap. Nevertheless I proceeded to rebuild the engine, got it running well and enjoyed the car for a brief period. But eventually I sold it because I had to come to terms with the fact that, based on the condition of the Mustang and my limited resources, I would never be able to repair the car to my liking.
Working on that Fastback I gained volumes of mechanical experience, but more importantly I learned a valuable lesson in the process. I learned to trust my instincts. Even as an 18 year old young man, my instincts initially told me to steer clear of that particular car, and I eventually came to the conclusion that my instincts were right.
Benefit for Guide Dogs for the Blind —- Thanks to club member Monique Morales and her band, Cadillac Jacks for inviting VMOA. I attended this event on Sunday, July 27th and counted ten club cars that showed up and enjoyed great music, barbecue and some very nice cars.
