Featured Car of the Month
Robert Wilson’s 1969 Fastback
I fell in love with Mustangs as a teenager. My Dad’s friend took me for a ride in his 1968 Fastback and I just knew I had to have one of my own! A few years, in 1986, my Dad’s girlfriend called me and told me that she had a 1969 Fastback and it could be mine for a mere $800.00. I’ll take it! I borrowed a few hundred dollars from my Step-Dad and the car was all mine. At the time of purchase the car was an inline six automatic transmission with only first and third gear. Needless to say, it couldn’t stay like this forever.

The poor car was driven like this for a good three years before it finally quit on me; it was time to take it all apart and revamp the engine. My daughter was five years old at the time, and with a pair of tube socks covering her hands right up to her elbows we dove right in and tore apart the engine. Once we got in there we found that all, but one, of the teeth on the timing gear had been stripped off and were waiting to be discovered in the oil pan. After I changed the front suspension, fixed the engine once, then fixed the engine a second time the car then became a one-of-a-kind lawn ornament in front of my house until 1994 when I was given an ultimatum: fix the car or get rid of it! Well, that was an easy decision; I got the car up and running again. The car now has a standard C-4 with a 302. In 2002, I was able to paint the car and fix up the interior; my daughter even found original 1970 Mustang floor mats that match the interior carpet perfectly. The car is now thoroughly enjoyed by all in my family and we have made it a tradition to participate in Hot August Nights every year. My five year old grandson has also fell in love with Mustangs and loves to go cruising with his Grandpa!
